St. Thomas Piano Pedagogy Workshops—2012-2013
Illinois native Emily Nelson holds a Masters in Music Education, Piano Pedagogy emphasis, from the University of St. Thomas, and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Northwestern—St. Paul. Ms. Nelson has been playing the piano since 1992 and teaching since 2006, finding inspiration in a wide variety of musical styles. She has performed a diverse repertoire of solo and ensemble literature throughout the country and is frequently in demand as an accompanist for vocalists, instrumentalists, opera rehearsals, choirs, and private studios. When Ms. Nelson isn’t teaching or playing music she is probably listening to music, and thinks many of her students would be surprised by just how varied her tastes are. Ms. Nelson also enjoys exploring the many lakes and trails Minnesota has to offer. There are few things that give her greater pleasure than discovering new and interesting places, reading, psychology, spoiling her cat Lily, and spending time with the people she loves.
Music is one of the most beautiful gifts we have and it is a privilege to study. People and music are my passions; I feel incredibly fortunate to work with both every day and call it a job. My goal is to develop a lifelong love for music that fosters self expression, independence, creativity, and excellence in each student. Learners will be inspired and challenged by my enthusiasm, structure, and genuine care for them. I am absolutely committed to finding methods that fit the individual and to offer performance opportunities at all levels. The needs and goals of the student are always top priority. When working with younger learners I desire to form a team and open communication between the parent, student, and myself. I emphasize respectful communication at every age and stage.
