Chris spent 10 years cultivating a private lesson studio in Texas, working with middle school and high school students in the Dallas-Fort Worth area public schools. Over that time he honed his pedagogy, and was able to help many students earn positions in their school's top bands, earn seats in their All-Region and All-State bands, and excel at their Solo and Ensemble auditions. In addition, Chris has 9 years of college teaching experience, having taught at the University of North Texas, University of Northern Iowa, Winona State University, College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University, and the University of Minnesota.

A lesson with Chris may begin with fundamentals to make sure there is a solid foundation of tone, intonation, and relaxed hand positions; but the main goal of each lesson is to get to the music and discover the nuances of why we all gravitate towards music.

When the weather calls for it, Chris likes to take long walks and hikes with his girlfriend, Emily, and his dog, Duke.

The thoughts and feelings put into the sounds I can produce individually or as a member of an ensemble enables me to achieve this. It helps me enjoy life!

Lessons with John start with a brief warm up followed by technical exercises, then on to solo studies or work on the student's ensemble music. Lessons usually end with clarinet duets played by the student and John.

In his spare time, John plays clarinet in the Seward Concert Band and is the director of the Saint Paul Postal Band. He is an avid cyclist, enjoys hiking, camping, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. He also reads a lot: biographies, history, historical novels, mysteries.

Kelly has several years of experience and training and uses a variety of repertoire to teach each student. While she uses certain repertoire for core teaching, she enjoys exploring other pieces and approaches, depending on the student’s needs and preferences. She also enjoys bringing her studio together at least twice a year for recitals that are partly renowned for the receptions following the performances! They are a fun way to gather and for students, parents, family, and friends to get to know each other while enjoying some very delicious treats!

Depending on the student's age and level, lessons usually start with some kind of warmup. This might be reviewing an old piece (review work) with a focus on whatever it was that we emphasized in the previous lesson to help build skill mastery and confidence. It might also include scales and/or etudes. Working on the piece(s) the student is learning or working on polishing would be next. Depending on where the student is with learning and polishing their current piece, focus is placed on building skill and artistry, and also starting a new piece, previewing a spot or two in the new piece or going over parts of the piece to help the student (and parent) understand the key points and expectations for the piece. To end the lesson, Kelly gives the student an opportunity to perform their piece all the way through without any interruptions or corrections.

In her spare time, Kelly likes to knit, garden, read and spend time with her cats. And sleep. ;-)

Sue loves her job and loves playing the piano and she hopes to instill that passion in her students. Her degree and specialty is in piano pedagogy, the art of teaching piano, and she has been doing this a very long time!  Her other specialty is designing music games that make learning music theory more fun and applicable. And she will try almost anything and can sightplay almost anything so no matter what the student wants to learn, she will find a way to adapt.

Lessons are designed to take the student to the next step, whatever that may be, and hopefully get the student self-motivated to continue the progress at home. She matches her teaching style to the student's learning style. Together, they will explore a healthy diet of largely classical music mixed with technique/etudes (vitamins!) adding in any other musical styles that interest the student and get them playing (dessert!)

She loves reading, outdoor adventures with her husband, Kurt, and quiet indoor evenings with her cat, Unk.

Nancy can discern what the student needs to do to improve because she has 34 years of experience teaching band and band lessons on flute, clarinet, saxophone and trumpet. She has a system that emulates what the student is doing to make the "interesting" sounds that come from the student's instrument. Then she can help them to improve their sound.

A typical lesson starts with greeting the student and asking about something in their life that interests them, such as swimming lessons, summer camps, etc. Then they begin by playing a warm-up sheet including:  long tones, tonguing exercises, octave exercises, and chromatic scale. While playing these warm-ups, Nancy will focus on basics of hand position, embouchure, breathing, and tone production.

Then they move on to a lesson book assignment and to some fun music. Then she concentrates on rhythms, correct notes, musicality, but she no longer picks on any concerns about embouchure, tone production and hand position.

In her spare time, Nancy runs, swims and walks her dog Gus at her farm. Also, she loves to practice her flute as she has many performances to prepare for.

She achieves this by equipping them with essential tools: not just how to read music, but how to practice effectively and learn music independently.

Sarah has a special gift for working with young beginners, transforming lessons into a fun, engaging adventure that keeps them focused and excited to learn. She believes lessons should be as unique as the student, which is why she tailors each session to individual goals and interests. A typical lesson is a dynamic mix of mastering pieces, building solid technique, developing great practice habits, and playing creative music games.

During the summer term, students enjoy a creative shift, where they take a break from traditional books to explore any music they love—from pop hits to video game themes—all while continuing to play games and strengthen their skills.

Cynthia is insightful and has diverse skills as a musician and teacher: she teaches and utilizes improvisation, music theory, sol-fege, singing and stylistic flexibility. She is energetic and enthusiastic. She is able to shape the student’s learning experience to their learning style, while assisting them to expand the ways in which they grasp their musical experience. She connects with her students. She has been told by them that she is “fun.”

A typical lesson, Cynthia will check in with her students, ask how their week was, if anything special has occurred in their days since they last met. Then she likes to start with technical exercises, (scales, etc.) then move to lesson material assigned. She likes to have time to go over new material, anticipating with the student what they will encounter and help them identify specific practice strategies in material assigned. Next is music theory - either going over a given theory assignment, or teaching new skills, ear training, terminology. She likes to include some improvisation as part of their exploration of the elements of music. With young beginners, this is modified! More focus on movement and/or singing to help them understand concepts of notation and rhythm as well as musical expression.

In her spare time, Cynthia enjoys playing with her dog, Ellie! She also likes to read, write, garden, knit, and spend time with friends and family.

She focuses on the journey that the music takes us on and the individual path of each student. She is also a strong advocate of body awareness: how the entire body aids in the process of creating sound.

Jenny loves to get to know her students! The best part of making music is adding your own experiences to something that may have been written long ago and taking time to focus on what you can add to the music.

When she’s not teaching or performing, Jenny can be found spending time with her husband and two dogs. She also loves reading and playing Nintendo.
