frequently asked questions

  • At K&S, we provide lessons on a semester basis. Semesters provide the opportunity for 16 lessons if you are signing up at the beginning of a semester. If the current semester is in progress, your instructor will prorate your tuition based on the remaining lessons in the semester. Students can start at any time in the semester. Adult students are given the flexibility to not take weekly lessons, with approval from the instructor.

  • There are several ways to go about this, but the easiest way is directly through the instructor. The office will forward your information to your preferred instructor and they will reach out to discuss scheduling, billing, and any additional lesson information that is relevant for your first lesson. Once the two of you work out a lesson schedule together, the instructor will send a registration form your way!

  • All students must have an instrument in which they have accessibility for practice throughout the week. Your individual lesson instructor is a great resource if you are looking to purchase or rent an instrument. They will also let you know what curriculum books you need to purchase once you begin lessons.

  • All instructors at K&S are independent contractors and set their own lesson rates. Each instructor's rate is usually dependent on education and experience. As for a general range, most instructors fall between $30-$40 per 30 minute lesson. Some teachers will do a trial/sample lesson before starting the registration process, but this will be dependent on which instructor.

Regardless of instructor, there will be a $20 registration fee per semester per student.

  • No! You are free to try lessons with any instructor on any instrument! However, there is a caveat to that. Once you register & pay with your current instructor, you are expected to complete the lessons that you were invoiced for. Any missed lessons are subject to the instructor’s missing lesson policy. If you would like to try a new instructor or want a new musical perspective, feel free to reach out to the K&S Office; we can get you in contact with another teacher! We also offer an 8-week introduction to lessons for new students, so you could see if the teacher/instrument is a good fit for you and your family.

  • Starting music lessons is such a rewarding time in a child's life and we are honored that you are considering K&S for that milestone. Does the student have any particular interests as far as instruments go? Starting them on an instrument that they are fascinated with is the best option, especially since they will need to be motivated to practice outside of their weekly lessons. Additionally, beginning music lessons can be a financial investment. Do you have any instruments readily available at home? Perhaps starting with an instrument that you already have access to would also be a great place to begin.

However, if the student doesn’t have a preference in instrument and you are able to go out and purchase or rent an instrument you might not already have, I would recommend beginning with piano lessons! Learning piano is a foundational musical instrument as it allows for learning of both treble and bass clef, working on finger dexterity, and improving memory and concentration skills as eventually the students will eventually advance to doing separate things with both hands.

Guitar or violin lessons would be another great option for a student if you aren't ready to purchase a piano quite yet. Any wind instruments (trumpet, saxophone, etc.) I would hold off on recommending until your student is 10 or older, so that their lessons can be supplemented with school band programming (typically middle school aged) if you were interested in that!

We have a wide selection of instructors for whichever instrument you decide on, and we are more than happy to help you find the best fit once you are ready to begin! Some follow up information might be needed (such as student's names, availability for lessons, etc.) but we can cross that bridge when we get there.

  • The scholarship program that we work with is MusicLink. We have a handful of instructors that are registered to offer this scholarship. It will take 50% off of the lessons cost for your student. You can find more information here: https://www.musiclinkfoundation.org/

Once you have reviewed the information at that website, you will need to register for the scholarship program at this link: https://www.musiclinkfoundation.org/partcpat.php Your selected instructor can also walk you through that process too!
